YouTube: Fostering Second Life Art

August 17th, 2007

A new group recently appeared on YouTube in order to promote and showcase artwork in SL.

The group description states: “Art and culture are thriving in Second Life. Much of the time a simple photo isn’t enough to capture the kinetic and performance elements of this virtual art.”

This group is an excellent opportunity to present much of the incredible work in Second Life, which is mostly not seen or simply not captured by the still imagery that makes up much of the collective view of Second Life. This group will hopefully give people a new window into SL.

Dresden’s Old Masters Move To Second Life

August 14th, 2007

The Old Masters Picture Gallery in Dresden, Germany has established a virtual presence in Second Life, as Wired Magazine reported earlier today. The real gallery in Dresden was founded nearly 300 years ago, boasting a 37,700 square feet space in a 150-year-old building.

Dresden’s virtual presence marks the first official move of a RL museum to the virtual world. As Wired reported, “virtual versions of other collections (most famously “Second Louvre,” which has no official ties to the Paris museum) have [also] popped up.”

Dresden’s virtual reproduction has been recreated with immense accuracy and detail. As Wired reported, “the grounds outside, have been recreated, down to the trash cans and fountains in the courtyard and ceiling moldings, staircases and furniture within.”

Dresden’s Second Life build is a must see! The Gallery houses 750 paintings of The Old Masters, spanning 500 years of European art.

Harry Potter: A Second Life Success

August 8th, 2007

Executed by This Second Marketing LLC., a series of avatars were recruited and paid real world wages to act as virtual “Buzz Agents” for the new IMAX Harry Potter film, “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.”

The Hollywood Reporter presented a story earlier this week on the success of this campaign, and noted that it was a marketers dream come true.

Greg Foster, chairman and president of Imax Filmed Entertainment, said, “Reaching 15,000 people in exactly the demographic you’re shooting over seven days is sort of hitting the marketing bonanza.”

As the Hollywood Reporter noted, “the campaign logged 25,189 individual Imax brand interactions when including all conversations with Second Life avatars, many of which occurred on more than one occasion.”

Immersive Interface for Virtual Worlds

August 6th, 2007

As reported by domain-B.com, IBM India is planning to create an immersive interface, where real life movements and actions would translate into virtual world operations.

IBM’s project comes out of an internship program for students at technical and business schools, who will work at IBM India Software Lab.

As reported by domain-B, Benjamin Chodroff of case Western Reserve University, who came up with idea, states: “The interface will allow users in the virtual world to experience objects in the real world through a new and exciting rich immersive environment. The new idea has many applications and will enhance both the virtual world and the real world with rich connectivity and on-demand-access from any part of the globe.”

This also coincides with IBM’s new energy project, called ‘Project Big Green,” where they plan to take on energy conservation initiatives.

Second Life: A Real Life Subpoena

August 6th, 2007

Earlier today, Reuters reported about a pending Real Life lawsuit regarding property rights in Second Life.

Summary of the case:

“Second Life firm Eros, run by Kevin Alderman (Second Life: Stroker Serpentine) sued resident Volkov Catteneo in July, charging he illicitly sold copies of Eros’ “SexGen” bed. As part of the lawsuit, Eros subpoenaed PayPal and Linden Lab in an attempt to discover Catteneo’s real-world identity” (Reuters).

Linden labs and Paypal have both been subpoenaed, but Paypal, as of today, has complied. Linden labs has yet to supply any information.

The subpoena will result in Linden lab handing over, as Reuters writes, ” ‘the entirety of identifying information’ the company has on the avatar, including Catteneo’s Internet protocol addresses and chat histories.”

Silver Bells and Golden Spurs

August 3rd, 2007

I know I’m late to the party, but Bedazzle Studios released an incredible piece of machinima quite some time ago. I have yet to see something rival it, even though its been out for so long!

Based on an old cowboy poem, Eric Call, the director, brings the poem to life on his Second Life based set.

SL Economy: An Unsustainable Boom?

August 3rd, 2007

Matthew Beller of Ludwig von Mises Institute released an article today titled The Coming Second Life Business Cycle, which critiques Linden Lab’s execution and management of the LindeX and SL economy.

Beller states that SL’s intervention in society, by freely controlling the key commodity: money, will lead to some sort of recession for the SL economy. Beller writes, “[The sales of L$] do not reflect a flow of real wealth into Second Life. Instead, they are created by Linden to represent wealth, but no economic production was involved in creating them.”

Linden Credit Card*

To my understanding, Beller is suggesting since Linden Labs can create as much L$ to make up for their “budgetary shortfalls without ever issuing any debt,” they generate an artificial inflation of the currency and thus point SL towards an unstable economy.

He offers two possible outcomes:

“In the first, Linden will stop running significant deficits at some point. With less L$ available to spend, residents will demand fewer goods and services, leading to lower prices and reduced profits.”

“[And in the second,] Linden will continue running deficits to the point that a sufficient number of residents and speculators will recognize the L$’s frailty…[and] everyone will scramble to redeem his L$ for “real goods,” which, in the case of Second Life, is probably the US$.”

Ultimately, Matthew Beller’s article does not offer a positive outlook for the SL economy, however he does tender his opinion on how to avert an SL recession. “If Linden wants to prevent this from happening and foster a stable, growing economy within Second Life, it should apply the lessons of Austrian economics to its policies: abolish restrictions on content, strengthen the ability of residents to enforce their property rights, and, most important, tie the L$ to a real-world commodity money backed by 100% reserves.”

Voice Goes Live!

August 2nd, 2007

After weeks of voice testing on the Beta Gird, Linden Labs announced today that Voice is Live on the main grid. The voice client is going to revolutionize the way avatars interact with each other in Second Life — yet another component of Second Life which is blurring the lines between reality and virtual reality.

Voice Client Image

[IMG of the voice client found in the lower right hand corner of SL applet]

As quoted from the Second Life’s blog, they present a few key points regarding the voice client:

**

Voice is an optional feature. Though Voice is part of the main viewer now, it is turned off by default. You must explicitly choose to enable voice in order to use it, and can turn it on and off as you wish. Voice can be enabled and disabled in Edit > Preferences > Voice Chat. A voice set-up wizard will also appear once, during “first use” or “first Resident login to a voice viewer.” You can use it to set-up voice if you wish.

Voice is available everywhere.
Please note that voice is available throughout Second Life, and all regions have been enabled. Estate owners can disable voice on their estates if they choose.

Voice is controlled by you. Parcel owners can control how voice is used on their parcel via the “About Land” dialog. Also, individual Residents may be muted via the Active Speakers window or by right-clicking on their avatar. Read more in the Voice FAQ:
https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Voice_FAQ

Voice is open source. For anyone interested in contributing to open source voice development, we have released the tarball for voice here: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Source_downloads#ver_1.18.1.2

Voice is hosted on separate servers. Many Residents have expressed concern and confusion as to why voice would be released when Second Life periodically has performance issues. Voice is intentionally designed to run on systems completely independent from Second Life as not to impair performance.

**

What’s next for the first look viewer? It seems that Linden labs will be releasing a client with new atmospheric rendering, but more on that later.

Wheelies

August 2nd, 2007

Wheelies is the first disability themed nightclub within Second Life, located on Second Ability Island.

wheelies_sim.jpg

[Photo of Simon’s Avatar at Wheelies]

The nightclub is owned and operated by Simon Walsh, a disability consultant, trainer and researcher. As quoted from his blog, he states that he has two ventures in SL: “The first is Wheelies, a virtual disability themed nightclub [and the] second is Stevens Centre which is a training centre which is still in the development stage.”

Newsweek ran a video on Wheelies and Second Life last week; Click here to see it. While Newsweek’s video is informative it is also quiet fascinating.

Second Life builds, such as Wheelies, where RL convalescent communities are able to thrive despite their conditions is a growing phenomena in Second Life. A variety of builds from both an educational as well as user oriented perspective are on the rise. Check back soon for SLing’s post on Health in Second Life.
